Nepenthes Ali'i is a hybrid by the Leilani Hapu'u Nursery in Hawaii. The nursery is beginning to put out their own hybrids that are very interesting. This particular hybrid arrived as a large plant with multiple pitchers. Leilani is releasing great quality plants that are rivaling Exotica Plants! There seems to be some variation within the hybrids but I really like this one Sam chose for me. It is a dark color with a lot of N. sanguinea in it. I do very well with N. sanguinea so this hybrid should be an easy grower for me. I haven't seen enough of these hybrids to describe all the variations yet. Some photos at Cobraplant.com shows lots of N. maxima influence with splotching on the pitcher offset with a reddish peristome. Their photos look very different from the plant I have so there appears to be variation among the seed grown plants. I'll be growing this plant outdoors as a typical highlander in high sunlight all year around. The leaves are tough and thick and the plant is extremely hardened off. There was no loss of any pitchers after I potted it up. Whatever Leilani is doing to produce high quality hybrids he should continue.
